Info Pack - Cats

Kitten Facts

Fleas are very common. 1 in 10 kittens have allergies to fleas compared to dogs 1:4!. Most owners are not aware that their cat has fleas.

Any cat that hunts or has fleas will get tapeworm. There is only one product Drontal (praziquental) that kills them off. This drug comes in tablet and injection and is POM. Your kitten will spend hours playing, climbing curtains practicing hunting and fine movement.

Teeth start to change around 14-16 weeks, starting with the tiny front incisors. All teeth are down by six months of age. Eyes change from blue to yellow/green around 8 weeks.

Females may come into season at 6months or even earlier. Owners are often very concerned as they act as if they are in great pain. Roll on the floor, padding back legs with their tail and bottom in the air! - They are not dying- just in season.

Kittens tend to toilet train immediately, problems can arise with kittens pooing elsewhere. Check that the kitten likes the litter, check that the litter tray is away from their food and that the tray is in a quiet place.

Kittens eat small amounts and often. They require little water- but it should always be available. They may not drink if they are on canned food.

Cats do not require milk. All mammals stop taking milk at weaning. Humans, because they like it, and cats and dogs because humans like feeding milk to them!

Cats

Cats need lower protein as they get older. This helps to prevent kidney disease, the biggest killer, second to road traffic accidents of cats.

Spaying prevents mammary tumors. Male cats can get mammary tumours!

It is very important to watch the weight of cats. 1:4 cats are obese. Obesity increases, liver and heart disease and increases the risk of muscular skeletal disorders such as arthritis. Fat cats get fatter even though they eat the same. Fat cats sleep a lot and don't move around much. When dieting fat cats must aim for 200g weight loss per week. This is very slow and hard as cats will often go elsewhere if the menu is not to their liking.

Any sudden or slow weight loss in old cats has to watched, weigh your cat at home. Over active thyroid and sugar diabetes are both conditions common in old cats, but have treatments available.

Cats don't die of old age, they die because all their organs fail. We can often help the cat, even when the owner assumes there is nothing more that can be done.

Cats can live happily as house cats, this is not cruel. House cats live longer!
